great danger, and he was unable to escape capture, a large reward having been offered for his head. Keying did all he could to get possession of him.

The Surveyor General (Mr. Cleverly) employed Kwok A-bing, Government Contractor, during 1845, 1846, 1847, and he supplied the labor and materials for building the Cathedral and Government House, in addition to that required for many other public works.

When the War of 1856 broke out, Kwok A-bing again contracted for the supplies for both Army and Navy; and when all the Chinese in the Colony were ordered by edict to leave, he and one or two others maintained their ground and declined to obey the Order; and his steady adherence to the Colony did much towards instilling courage in the minds of others, and without doubt added greatly towards enhancing in the minds of his fellow countrymen the good faith and strength of the British Nation.

Such a history as that of Kwok A-bing, and his well-known wealth, made him an eyesore to the Chinese Authorities. In
