On the 17th Instant Mr Bollard forwarded to the Acting Colonial Secretary a letter containing a petition to Her Majesty accompanied by twelve affidavits confirmatory of the statements in his petition, and on his petition and documents were transmitted by the Acting Colonial Secretary to Chief Justice Smale, who was informed that I would be happy to forward whatever statement he wished to make in support of his judgment.

16. On the 24th Instant the Chief Justice sent to the Acting Colonial Secretary his extracts from various newspapers. I think's not aware that he considers any further step necessary, and I am not aware that he now transmit his letter (which he forwarded in print) as constituting what he regards as a sufficient reply to the direct charges of Mr Bollard.
