A difficulty has arisen from the unfortunate position of the Mahomedan Cemetery, which we fixed in 1858 on the hill immediately above the town—or rather above where part of the town has since extended. It is needless to remark that much filth would be objectionable anywhere, but still more so here where special Sanitary precautions are necessary—amongst which must be included the non-interment of the dead amongst the living, and the prevention of drainage from Cemeteries into water likely to be used in dwelling houses.

The reluctance of the Mahomedans to abandon the old site led to many and long discussions and correspondence on the subject, resulting at last in the provisions of the revised Ordinance, which enable the Governor to resume and close the old Cemetery, without disturbing existing remains, on providing due accommodation for interments elsewhere, and laying out a sum of 2000 dollars in fixing and preparing the ground, and compensation for the amount already expended on the old site.
