The propriety of Inspector Cronin's conduct arises from his having stood aloof from those corrupt practices which disgraced many of the Police, and which have enabled several to retire with considerable sums improperly acquired. Your Grace will approve this gratuity. It has, however, been allowed on the understanding that if not approved by Your Grace, it is to be refunded.
