I certify that Mr Shearman G. Bird has been ailing for some time past. He has

been in this climate, has been permanently since 1862 and has gradually been feeling more and more the effects of the climate. Symptoms of febrile and bilious disease have become so prominent of late that I strongly recommend him not to risk next summer.

but to be forced to hope in the Spring if practicable to go to the hills or to return to his friends in Hong Kong.

Colonial Surgeon.
