With Your Grace's approval, I therefore felt it was only right to allow him his salary whilst so employed on the special service of the colony since the 1st January, being the date of Mr Jarman's designation as Assistant Superintendent. As approved by Your Grace on 2nd April, 1867.

He will take rank next to the Superintendent, last till the date of his arrival here.

I have also directed that he be given a small sum which, with economy, will enable him to defray the cost of furnishing his quarters and other unavoidable preliminary expenses. I trust this arrangement will meet Your Grace's approval.

I have also directed that his service should count from the 10th of January, the date when it bonâ fide really commenced.

He has been gazetted Deputy Superintendent, so as not to alter the designation of Mr Jarman's appointment.

May it please Your Grace,

I remain,

Your Grace's most Obedient,

humble Servant,

Richard Graves MacDonnell,

Governor.
