At this stage of the inquiry (about 11 A.M.) and the Sergeant and Alves denying the truth of each other's statements, ordered all the parties consisting of Meacham, Cant, Alves, Burnside, Almade, and four of the convicts injured, to go to the scene of the accident.

And having obtained the assistance of Mr. Smith, we proceeded to the place where the men were killed and found all the parties waiting there, when after a good deal of explanation in which every person tried to clear himself and after hearing the statements of the four convicts who were injured, which event did corroborate the statement of Alves to the effect that they had been employed at the spot pointed out by the Overseer of Convicts, arrived at the following conclusion viz.
