The wound and the corroborative testimony of his Mate are conclusive, for unquestionably the Master did distinguish himself in strong contrast with all others similarly situated _since arrival here_ by the gallant and resolute efforts which he made to defend his vessel. It is very important that a marked distinction should be made between such a man and others who have contented themselves with a tame surrender of the property, which they were bound to defend, in the hope that their lives might be spared.
A Governor should reward such bravery, not fusillanimity. This breeds a hope in which they were more than once deceived, as in cases of the "Cart" and "Lubre".
In the event hereafter of any crew exhibiting similar cowardice in refusing to obey the legitimate order of the Master of Ship to assist in defending their vessel, I shall not fail to bear in mind the opinion given in Mr Farrer's letter of the 19th last December to the Under Secretary for the Colonies as to the possibility of furnishing such crew, however...
