OFFICE OF SURVEYOR GENERAL
(Art. of Ingons, No. 38.)
ESTIMATE OF THE EXPENSE NECESSARY TO BE INCURRED For Repairs to Praya.
Wall in Victoria.
REPORT AND ESTIMATE No. // OF 1867,
DATED 17 January 1867.
PLAN OR DESCRIPTION. LABOUR. MATERIALS TO BE PURCHASED. MATERIALS TO BE ISSUED FROM STORES. PORTION OF WORK TO BE PERFORMED BY CONTRACT. TOTAL. ... ... ... ... ... ...During the past year Praya Wall has been constructed from Bonham strand west to Moss Street fall at end of wharf; and also in front of the Plaza from Farm Middle Free to the government wharf. Both these portions of work are very substantially constructed and employed in Repairs likely to last without repair for many years.
The Praya wall west of Western Market has not yet been completed, it is however in course of construction, a length of 310 feet at the end of Middle Bazaar Street will be built by the Government.
Great inconvenience has been experienced especially during the last few months from the sea having washed through the interstices in the old sea wall many times, and thus undermined the adjoining ground causing large holes which cannot be seen until a horse puts its foot through them. By backing new sea walls with Concrete this difficulty will doubtless be overcome in future.
The repair of Piers, Wharves, and Landing Places also comes under this Report and Estimate. The new wall at end of Michelle Street will be constructed by Contract; all repairs must be made by daily labor or measured work.
The total is the same as last year $2,000.
Approved,
Joshua R. G. MacDonnell
Governor.
