Hong Kong. 24th January 1877.

Having carefully examined Mr. W. J. Mercer and taken into our consideration his 23 years' residence in this Colony, the chronic dyspepsia he suffers from and the unmistakable symptoms he presents of hepatic derangement, and predisposition to hepatic disease, together with those head symptoms which are so apt to supervene after a lengthened residence in this climate, we have no hesitation in stating our opinion that Mr. Mercer has already prolonged his stay beyond the term that prudence would dictate, and that any further continuance here we dread the result of any illness which the hot weather might induce.

And therefore we strongly advise his immediate and permanent removal from Hongkong.

(Signed)

Man T. Aukave

TR.CS.I.

Colonial Surgeon
