I beg to acknowledge the receipt of Your Letter of the 14th instant, in which You acquaint me that Mr. Secretary Cardwell has acceded to my request on my departure from England to Hong Kong, dated the 4th of September next; that I cannot be allowed to draw half Salary beyond the 31st of May; and that I shall be entitled to the half Salary as Chief Justice from the 21st of February last.

I respectfully present my most grateful thanks for the indulgence allowed me within which to return to Hong Kong; for the permission to draw half salary up to the 31st of May next; and for the allowance.
