Recounting place for the Carpe fleet of American Whalers in the Pacific. Over 100 Square-rigged people are expected to be in this port.

The native population continues to decrease very rapidly, whilst there are numbers of American, European, Chinese, and other settlers here not menacing. The Americans are the most numerous and influential, and these numbers will join rather than be influenced by the natives of other communities from the causes previously mentioned.

The main product of these islands is sugar, which is almost entirely shipped to California and Oregon, although an excessive duty is charged on this article amounting to 100 per cent.

Many care to enable the Planters of Louisiana to send their sugar round Cape Horn to compete with that shipped from here. It would be an immense advantage to the Planters here and to the East generally if this duty were taken off.
