I am directed by Lord Stanley to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 12th instant, forwarding a despatch from the Governor of Hongkong on the subject of the seizure by the Chinese Government of the Steamer Prince Albert for visiting a port not open to foreigners by Treaty.
I am to state to you, for the information of the Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office, my approval of the course you adopted with reference to that demand.
