his office of Coroner, the duties of
which would have been
wholly
incompatible with that incessant
on the Assistant
worth devolving
Harbor Master who will virtually

appointment. At present I propose that
he retain his salary
as Interpreter
(£400 per annum) and draw £250 of that assigned to the
Assistant Harbor Master, not merely
as a temporary
arrangement, as he will always be in movement,
visiting
the
outstations as well as
personally
Superintending and
arranging
the
enforcement of the various regulations
connected with native craft under the
new Ordinance.

The
salary proposed
for
the
Assistant Harbor Master has
been fixed at £400
per annum
in addition on account of the novel and
severe duty imposed
on
him, and as
being peculiarly earned by his special acquirements in Chinese, and suitability
for the office, but also because in his
case
I have been obliged to take from him the emoluments of the
Coronership (£150 per annum).

The amount which probably will be found insufficient hereafter, if Mr. Jonnochy cannot be continued in the
post. The Harbor Master, who has
for a long time been working very zealously at all the preliminary arrangements
and is now
quite ready with all
