he retain his salary

as Interpreter

(£400 per annum) and draw £250 of that assigned to the

visiting

the

outstations as well as

personally

Superintending and

arranging

the

enforcement of the various regulations

connected with native craft under the

new Ordinance.

The

salary proposed

for

the

Assistant Harbor Master has

been fixed at £400

per annum

in addition on account of the novel and

severe duty imposed

on

him, and as

being peculiarly earned by his special acquirements in Chinese, and suitability

for the office, but also because in his

case

I have been obliged to take from him the emoluments of the

Coronership (£150 per annum).

The amount which probably will be found insufficient hereafter, if Mr. Jonnochy cannot be continued in the

post. The Harbor Master, who has

for a long time been working very zealously at all the preliminary arrangements

and is now

quite ready with all
