population under British sway in this Colony, and the
very peculiar habits
and prejudices of that people, the office
of Registrar General must be always regarded
as one
of the most important
posts held here under the Crown, and
also
one
especially deserving
The careful
supervision of Her Majesty's Government.
I am
myself of opinion that it should rank with the Offices of Surveyor General and Treasurer. Nevertheless
I only propose at present to place it
on a
level with the offices of Colonial and Colonial Chaplain in point of salary, by the additional
£100 a year for which
I confidently
anticipate Your Lordship's approval.
