I may also explain that, if not impossible, it is at least unlikely the proposed passage can interfere, as stated by the General, with the Hospital, the nearest part of which building is distant from it 400 feet. I likewise deny that such a wharf is not needed, for, whether within or without the Military Cantonments, there is indisputably a large Chinese and European population much interested in the undertaking. Their wants could not be met by the General's suggestion of seeking a site further Eastward, because no number of Wharves in that direction would satisfy the want of one to the Westward.

And I maintain that, except the Government wharf at the Bazaar, intended for general use, there is no other available site as already stated from the Eastern Praya to Wardley Street, a distance of 3250 feet West.

In no case, however, ought any plan for excluding the Public permanently from such a long line of beach be adopted without full consideration of the practicability of continuing Praya - at least on certain conditions, along the front of the Imperial Allotments when extended. I believe the present Admiral sees no reason why the Praya should not be continued in front of the Admiralty property, if the sea...
