to the Right Honorable the Secretary of State for War in July last, recommending the purchase of these houses belonging to the Bankrupt Estate of Messrs Fletcher & Co., for Military purposes—a measure that is deemed of the greatest importance to Imperial interests in this Colony.
I am further to remark that if the plan now proposed of establishing a landing place for Chinese at the spot mentioned in Colonel Lowell's letter be carried out, it will at once prostrate the object in view in purchasing the property above referred to. The Major General is anxious that no steps should be taken until the decision of the Right Honorable The Secretary of State has been received.
I have,
(Signed.) W. Hartman,
D.A.G. M. General.
