has proved to be necessary in coining the

2nd The speed of the Presses first arranged the same that adopted in the Madras Mint (where precisely similar presses are in use) viz 45 revolutions per minute. On this subject I consulted the Baron de Bussiere of the Paris Mint similar press is in use at that Establishment and the Five franc piece in some measure assimilates with the dollar. He stated that he would not advise a higher speed for so large a Coin.

3rd. The subsidiary coinage necessitating higher speed for the Presses I adopted larger pulleys producing 66 revolutions per minute I worked two presses continuously at this speed and soon worked under the decreased pressure with cool humings Smoothly these became more even.

About the 20th October having a small quantity of dollars to strike for the Hongkong Bank I tried the effect of the high speed on dollars as I wished to avoid removing the pulleys and also to coin rapidly; the results were satisfactory as the increased impetus certainly produced better coins and the Presses can work continuously without heated bearings.

Trusting the above explanations will be satisfactory
