of the Judge of the Court of Summary Jurisdiction it would be convenient to be able to supply his place with a new Barrister, which is generally practicable when one of the Magistrates.

I am therefore anxious that Your Lordship should, as early as possible, recommend a Barrister from Home for this appointment, and perhaps it may facilitate your procuring a suitable successor for Mr. Whyte, if an allowance were made for passage money to the Colony, because whilst it is not easy under any circumstances to find a competent person willing to come here for £800 per annum, I think the immediate outlay necessary for a passage would increase the difficulty of finding a suitable successor for Mr. Whyte in a degree disproportionate to the expense thereby thrown on the Colony.

I have the honour to be,

Your Lordship's

Most obedient servant,

Richard Graves MacDonnell

Governor
