The former case was specially adverted to in my despatch 96 of the 11th August, and I regret to say that no trace whatever has yet been discovered of those who were concerned in the attack.

I would however draw attention to the very gallant conduct of the Master of the "Bonaventure" who was wounded in two places, and had finally a wonderful escape. I think a suitable mark of appreciation of his conduct would be bestowed by Her Majesty's Government, and in this case would produce a most excellent effect.

I was extremely anxious to prosecute the crew for their cowardly desertion of the Captain, because if he had been seconded by them, as he deserved, he would probably have captured the Pirate.

I found however that the present state of the Law did not permit such prosecution - though I believe it might formerly have been maintained; and I would draw Your Lordship's attention to this point in the hope that Her Majesty's Government may take some measures for enforcing the duty of a crew to assist in protecting property against Pirates.
