OFFICE OF SURVEYOR GENERAL

ESTIMATE OF THE EXPENSE NECESSARY TO BE INCURRED FOR

Reservoir to impound 100,000,000 Gallons

PLAN OR DESCRIPTION.

This Report and Estimate is in support of Works which are proposed to be constructed at Pokfulam with a view of increasing the Water supply to the City of Victoria during the dry Seasons.

The existing Reservoir holds two Millions of Gallons, sufficient only to supply the city for one day and a half at 10 Gallons per Head: to a population computed at 140,000, including half only of the Boat people.

No rain can be depended upon during the dry season, viz: from the 1st November to the 1st April, and the inconvenience to which the Public have hitherto been subjected by a scarcity of Water from the Water Works has been very great during the dry Season. Moreover, at a Water rate of 2 per Cent is paid by the Public they have a right to expect a fair supply of Water at all Seasons of the Year.

Cubic Yards @ 20. This calculated that the different sources connected with the Water Works exclusive of the Main from Pokfulam supply 300,000 Gallons per diem during the dry Season, and what is proposed is to ensure a further supply of 700,000 Gallons making a Total of 1,000,000 Gallons per diem.

It is impossible from the nature of the ground to form a Reservoir at Pokfulam which will hold a larger quantity than 5 Months supply.

Approved,
