I also feel that whilst assuming all future cost which may arise from cell, candle, or oil, I avoid troubling Your Lordship further on this question on which you have entered with regret, and I gladly secure at any cost so many advantages.

In reference to instructions to refunds payments made by the Colony I have made inquiry, and find that no such payments have been made. All dues to the Gas Company have been paid from my private funds.

I wish to add in reference to one remark in Your Lordship's despatch, that I do not see how the temporary Administrator of a Government could have done otherwise than Mr. Maun did, if he is enjoined to have control over any part of the Government arrangements of residence. We certainly might have had the necessary repairs, and alterations completed before the arrival of an expected Governor. Otherwise I am bound to say that he had reasonable ground to suppose that he was promoting the comfort and convenience of the house, whilst he also did what was practicable to ascertain my personal wishes on the subject.
