2.

Your Lordship's Despatch winds up reference to the 11th and concluding paragraph, of my Despatch that the monthly gas Bills will not be paid by The Colony. It does not sufficiently appear from those, whether my offer is definitely accepted or not.

3.

I trust however it will save time and prevent further complication if I assume that such is the case, especially as our experience has quite settled the superiority of candles over oil and gas, when suspended from the ceiling, because they are better protected against draughts from doors and open windows.

It was objected that gas was cleaner than candles. I have therefore desired the gas to be cut off from Governor's House (the pipes will remain untouched), and future Governors can with facility revert to gas, a possible contingency (because the original waste and disagreeable accompaniments thereof have latterly been diminished).

I shall write by this Mail to direct seven lustres or chandeliers to be purchased and sent out at my own expense. By doing so, I shall probably procure much better articles and more perfectly adapted to the requirements of the place than if I were at liberty to order them through the Crown Agents, whilst I shall save many months if not a year by dispensing...
