Report on proposed Reserved Potrefulum to impound 100,000,000 Gallons for Water Works. The Hong Kong water works consists of a small reservoir at Potrefulum capable of containing 2,000,000 Gallons, and two tanks in the City, one containing 200,000 Gallons and supplying the upper levels, the other containing 850,000 Gallons supplying the remainder of the City.

The water is conveyed from Potrefulum by gravitation, a distance of 3½ miles into the city by means of a 10" main laid under the road. The height of the Reservoir is 460 feet above the sea level, and that of the high Level Tank to which the 10" main is laid, 200 feet above the sea.

This main was calculated to discharge, with a full reservoir, one Million Gallons in 24 hours. The actual discharge is, however, at the present time 775,000 Gallons only, and this is about the amount which it is proposed to ensure the supply from Potrefulum daily throughout the year.

Other sources in the immediate neighbourhood of the City are connected with the water works, the total average daily supply being about 300,000 Gallons. The supply which it is desired to obtain from Potrefulum is 1,000,000 Gallons, making a total of 1,000,000 Gallons per diem of 24 hours.

Site of Reservoir: It has been found impossible to obtain a better site on the Island for a large reservoir than at Potrefulum, and as the water is extremely pure, it has been determined to extend...
