I beg to inform the Right Honble Edward Cardwell, Secretary of State for the Colonies, that the Office of Chief Justice of Hong Kong having become vacant by the death of Mr. Adams, I venture respectfully to ask that I may be appointed his successor.

I have only recently recovered from a grievous family affliction, which has so much affected me that I feel very reluctant to return to those vehement contests at the Colonial Bar in England, for which I had been prepared.

I trust I could discharge more efficiently and satisfactorily the duties of a Colonial Judge, now more congenial to me.

Personal and public considerations therefore concur in determining me to seek an appointment for which I am well-suited, and to exchange my present office for one more lucrative.
