In the purchase of private furniture for the Fort, some Estimate was not sanctioned by the Hon'ble the Treasurer.
As however owing to the sudden retirement of his predecessor Sir ... was in a very unusual and embarrassing position, and as his Salary was only $3000 per annum, the then Lordship made him a special personal allowance of $1250, so that he should be offered the opportunity to purchase at a valuation.
The Successor, Mr. D. Johnson, was not bound by the decision of the Treasurer to offer his furniture for sale and it was of course open to him to accept or reject his offer as you may think best.
