From the Revd B. H. Kennedy D.D.
Head Master of Shrewsbury School.
My dear Allen,
Shrewsbury Sept 5th 1864
You may be assured that, as far as memory serves, I could never fail to remember any of my old Sixth Form pupils. Besides which I have had the pleasure of seeing you several times since you left Shrewsbury. Your position here is, I hope, a sufficient proof that you had made good use of your time, that you were a sound scholar and mathematician and that you had received much instruction in other abilities from which one of your standing would not fail to profit duly. I well recollect that I had every reason to be satisfied with your character & conduct at school, and as you then united good manners!
