The approximate salaries given by the Oriental Bank to their employés in India and China, are as follows:
Managers £2500 per annum.
Accountants £800
with house or house rent in addition.
They give to young clerks on first engagement £400 for the first year, £500 for the second year, £600 for the 3rd, £700 for the 4th, £800 for the 5th
with residence, Board and everything necessary in addition.
For offices of trust they pay much higher rates and in all cases provide residence, Board, service, and many other advantages.
All their officials have first class passages out and home and in the event of their being obliged to return from ill health, or being otherwise unfit, they allow six months' pay and free passage home overland.
With these facts before you, I beg to submit that the question of Salaries for the Mint of Hong Kong, requires careful re-consideration.
