I observe the Surveyor General regrets "that local circumstances were not enquired with before such definite arrangements completed for the Mint places."
On this question I beg to state, the rough plans were fixed by Sir Hercules Robinson, and Mr. Grahame, after grave consideration of the many requirements and difficulties, and with the benefit of Mr. Grahame's great experience at the Royal Mint, as the best that could be adopted.
I have not in any way increased the space decided on, nor am I doing otherwise than working out and perfecting the details without materially changing the original arrangements, which appear so well adapted in every respect for the intended purpose.
It cannot be deviated from without causing great inconvenience and loss in the future working of the establishment. A large level surface is imperative, as such heavy weights of Bullion in the various processes have to be repeatedly transferred from one department to another.
The impression of the officers of the Royal Mint is, that Sir Hercules Robinson contemplated placing the mint at New Town, where it was understood a suitable site existed.
