Cowan & Sons envelope machinery in London, but after months, I left on account of their giving up this branch of their business at that period.

In September 1850 I succeeded in obtaining employment in the Laboratory Department of the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich and was there on the experimental machine room until, in March 1862, Arthur Kinder, Engineer, & Manager of the Wimshurst's patent metal foil company (Limited) employed me in the capacity of manager of the Company's works, which engagement I now hold.

I now beg to append the following testimonials in proof of the above engagements, and if they prove satisfactory to you, and you should see fit to select one to fill the appointment I now apply for, I will endeavour to serve you honestly and conscientiously to the best of my ability.

Sir,

Your Obedient Servant,

(Signed) John Inglis

Capt. Kinder,

Royal Mint,

London

Having been applied to by Mr John Inglis for a Testimonial of character & ability, I, as his apprentice Master, have the greatest pleasure in doing so. During the five years from 1846 I had every reason to be perfectly satisfied both with his character and ability as a workman, and now consider him an exemplary & energetic young man.

I may also say that he occasionally assisted in the office with the business books.

Your Obedient Servant,
