In making application for the appointment of "Mechanical Engineer" of the Mint of Hong Kong I beg to bring under your notice the following statement of my engagements during 17 years practice as an engineer and machinist.

In the year 1846 I commenced my career as an apprentice to the Messrs Meiklejohn & Pursell, Iron founder and Engineers, New Edinburgh, and during the period I was in their employment I was engaged in iron casting, turning, fitting, erecting Steam Engines and machinery of various kinds.

For some time in January 1852 I entered the employment of Messrs Alex Corvan & Sons, paper manufacturers of Valleyfield Mills, and was there employed under their foreman engineer, Mr Ino Robertson, who is now in business for himself in Leith. I was engaged in the mills, making & keeping in repair Engines, Shafting & machinery, for a period of 6 years.
