Man. R+ I Ranthin of Liverpool "for "Ironwork for Roofs" to be delivered in Liverpool
Liverpool £ 1576.6.9
In the latter Sender there is included a proportion of extra Castings (to provide for accidents in transit) which was not included in my estimate, and which should strictly come out of the 10 per cent contingent item, but as the total so nearly accords with my original figures I prefer not to deduct that item at present.
The enclosed table of the Fenders now recommended, will, I must give the information acquired by His Grace letter of the 18th instant.
On the occasion of my journey to Essen in Prussia to inspect the steel works offered by Mess Krupp, by the advice of M. Graham (& in compliance with a wish expressed to me by Sir Hercules Robinson) I took the opportunity of visiting on two occasions the Imperial Mint at Paris, where in consequence of Mr. Graham's introduction, I was permitted to see the whole of the details necessary.
From the system there adopted I think it may be minor to the Automaton weighing apparatus in the Estimate, to obtain accounting to £1630 in total as long as our Coinage is confined to Dollars, and by the kindness of the Director of the Mint I am in hopes of obtaining certain improved machines, in use at the Imperial Mint; by which if adopted we shall have sufficient to cover the cost of the extra machines required.
