4. Distinguish between a rhizome
corm and a bulb.
EXPLANATIONS:-
Last week we looked at different types of storage organs. In this question it requires just ONE - the potato. Let us see if you agree- with the following explanation.
During the active growing sea-
•son, much food is made by the j leaves (photosynthesis) and the surplus is transported down the phloem of the vascular bundles to the ends of lateral under- ground branches, which gradual- ly becomes swollen with food, Thus it is known as a atem tuber. The food stored is star- oh which is present as avoid granules in the cortex and pith and the protein granules in the cells immediately below the ep- idermis. (This is why when we oook potatoes, it is unwise to peel as we tend to peel away the protein.)
When conditions become favour able for active growth the stored starch and protein is reoonverted to soluble sugar. and passed to the buds, (growing point) activated by water, A growth enzymes help to accele rate the multiplication of cell and formation of new structures such sa young shoots, leaves and roots.
4. With reference to last week's
notes, you should be able to distinguish between these food storage organa. Had the question used the word tabulate you could have presented your answer in a table: form but as it is you have to distinguish them point by point, not organ by org- an. That is to say note the difference or similarity of each aspect one after another. eg.
External shape:
Rhizome: thickened, horizontal
underground. stem.
Stem tuber: swollen and of horiz-

Root tuber: swollen root.

lateral roots, and. root hairs with buls at base of dead leaves.
Corm: hearing brown scale in ringe
on outside.
Bulb: brown, protective scale leaves in layers. Types of roots developed adventiti
us.
Type of food stored: depending on the example chosen, otherwise all of] them contain some protein, with atarch as the main food stored in atem tubers while glucose and inulin in the other.

Mathematical Induction
Hathematical Induction is an indirect method to prove the truth of certain mathematical results. The methode of proof involves the following stepai
1. Prove that the proposition is true for
some values of n, that is n-1,2,3, eta..
2. Assuming that the propósition is also
true for a-k, then deduce that it is for n=k+1....
