Dear Lord Frederick,
In the month of ... last, being then very ill, I obtained leave of absence for twelve months from His Excellency the Governor and Council of Hongkong. I was then suffering from Congestion of the Brain, Chronic Diarrhea, and most agonising attacks of Neuralgia, almost continuous, and which rendered thought and continuous sleep impossible. I am thankful to say that I am now much better than I was - my memory has much improved, the congestion is considerably alleviated, the Diarrhea is checked, the Neuralgia pains are much less frequent and violent, and I have now a well-grounded hope that I shall soon be enabled to resume the discharge of my judicial duties in an efficient and proper manner.
To enable me to do so, however, it is necessary for me to remain some months longer in England, my medical attendants entertaining no doubt that I shall be fully restored to health in the course of time. The Congestion of the Brain and strictness in Neuralgia under which I was suffering when I came to England have been very greatly alleviated, but I am still weak from the effects of Diarrhea and general debility, which will, I trust, gradually disappear under the skilful care of my medical attendant, who has had great experience in the treatment of the diseases of tropical climates.
