may succeed in consolidating then scattered forces, and may make a decisive blow on the Province in which Canton is situated, and attack even that city itself.
We also fear should then turn out to be well founded, and His Majesty's Representative at Pekin,
the Consul at Canton should in consequence make requisitions upon you for troops for the protection of the lives and property of the European inhabitants of that city, you will meet those requisitions so far as the means at your disposal will enable you to do so; confining yourself however within the limits prescribed by the General instructions contained in
Lord Canning's letter of 24th February last.
