Most of these two despatches refer to the matter referred for the consideration of the Law Officers, who have stated that on sanitary grounds there would be no objection to the protection of the building for which it is proposed.
If correct, & as his Lordship has suggested, the site at the West corner of the Parade ground, which was proposed in 1862 (but it has not been abandoned), should revert to the charge of the Ordnance Department.

I have therefore recommended to you my sanction for the erection of the City Hall as recommended by Mr. Mercer, & upon the distinct understanding, however, that the alterations in the Station Master's Office, & the deviation of the Road which will be necessitated, do not entail any charge on the Public Revenue.
