On the 8th of January, I furnished the Colonial Office with an approximate estimate of the cost of the materials for erection of the buildings to be sent from here; and which comprises their total cost, excepting labour, the masonry, timber, &c. to be found in China, at £4,676.8 and of this amount I have already entered into contract to the extent of £3,052 for the large sum of £4,721, thereby making a saving of £331.

Of the remaining amount, namely £464, for which the detailed particulars are now ready to be given out to the Contractors, I trust to make an additional saving of, at least £172, which was the amount calculated for contingencies in the approximate estimate. My total expenditure on this head will thereby amount to about £3,504.

In the case of the Sydney Mint, the building materials were chiefly procured in the Colony, only about £3,730 worth of building materials appears to have been sent from this Country.

Among the larger items of expenditure included under this head for the Hong Kong Mint, for which there are corresponding items for the Sydney Mint, may mention that light columns and cinders with glazed partitions have been substituted in the Coining Room instead of cumbrous and ...
