were no doubt issued without any notice to the public of weight & with only their general notice, as to composition, of them being

composed of a mixed metal or bronze, i.e., composed of copper, tin, and zinc (London Gazette of Oct. 10, 1860). But the 2 shilling token Florin was described in the proclamation facing it, by composition precisely, – (London Gazette of August 3, 1849, annexed) and I do not myself see that there would have been any objection to describing

the new

coinage. Any coins, both silver and copper, should be described by composition in the same manner.

But although the casing objection is a sufficient reason for not informing the public on

this subject, I apprehend that it is still desirable not to leave the Secretary of State – as this letter still does – in the singular position of not knowing the contents of coins, specially struck for a Crown Colony, paid for out of the Colonial Revenue. We
