ORDINANCE No. 19 OF 1862.

Enacted by the Governor of Mauritius and its Dependencies, with the advice and consent of the Council of Government thereof.
An Ordinance for enabling the Government to pay £300,000 from the Colonial Treasury, and to borrow money on Debentures to the extent of £1,000,000, for the construction of Railways in the Colony.

WHEREAS it is expedient to construct two lines of Railway in this Colony: the one from the Town of Port Louis, Northward, through the Districts of Port Louis, Pamplemousses, Rivière du Rempart, and Flacq: the other from the said Town, through the Districts of Port Louis, Plaines Wilhems, and Grand Port, to the Town and Harbour of Mahbourg;
AND WHEREAS, no Joint Stock or other Company having undertaken the said construction, it is expedient that the same be constructed by Her Majesty's Government in the Colony, at the expense of the Public Treasury thereof;
AND WHEREAS it is necessary to provide funds for the purchase of such land, and for the construction and purchase of such works, materials, and others, respectively, as may be required in connection with the said Railways;
BE IT THEREFORE ENACTED by His Excellency the Governor with the advice and consent of the Council of Government, as follows:
I.-It shall be lawful for the Governor, by Warrant under his hand, to authorize payment from the Colonial Treasury of any sum or sums not exceeding Three Hundred Thousand Pounds (£300,000) sterling in addition to the proceeds of the Loans authorized by the present Ordinance, towards the construction of the Railways hereinbefore described or one or other of them, which purpose shall include the purchase of land, the payment of all sums due under Contracts for the construction of any works or buildings, and for the purchase and construction of any carriage, tools, machinery or other matters or things.
