"The town is situated behind a high point, a deep Water Canal runs in front of the town where a number of junks are moored, head and stern, and at the entrance of the Canal there is a fort armed with three 24 Pounders.
The N. E. Monsoon blowing fresh I remained there a day, and then steamed up the coast, calling at Lan-Tong (St John's), Conlan, and Buck-chne; at the latter place a few of the pirates have returned, but the neighbourhood has been quiet since our visit there last month.
From all I could gather at Macao, and from different sources on the West Coast, the pirates have been of late tolerably inactive in those parts.
