as March 1, 31st August in the present year to have been 309 above those received in the corresponding period of the year 1863, whilst exceeding in number those dispatches during periods, and the Revenue to the same period also shows an increase during the past 6 months of $4,695 over that received during the corresponding period of the preceding year; that to the Imperial Port office having also increased $3,093, 4s.; the total increase in the Revenue of the Department for the period in question being $19,472.79.

Under these circumstances, I would solicit that I may be empowered to employ an additional sorter at $40 per mensem from the 1st of October, and I trust that this will be found sufficient for present purposes; I need scarcely add that every exertion will be made to this end, although if the duty required continues to increase, I much fear that a further hand will be required next year.
