One altogether have escaped so heavy a storm, much damage however would have been avoided if a drain like the one communicated between Robinson Road and De Voeux Street on Ireland's lot box. I propose this should be at once made, the Tenants being required to pay half the expense.

As a temporary measure, I am erecting a rough stone wing walls to the mouth of that drain. In the event of another heavy fall, the water may be led into the drain, instead of being allowed to flow down Peel Street. I am convinced the best form of drain is the flat topped one which Mr Cleverly has latterly adopted, both for its simplicity and the ease with which it can at any time be opened in any place.

The greater part of those now in use must have been built without any supervision; the joints will allow, in many instances, of a man's hand being passed through them and this, I think, in a great measure accounts for the amount of silt which finds its way down into the drain during heavy rain. Strong Stone Barriers should be placed at the mouth of all large drains to prevent Boulders passing into them.
