It will be seen that the Acting Surveyor General at first estimated the cost of the repairs to public works roughly at 50,000 Dollars, but he was directed to send in detailed Estimates, and he has since furnished two Reports and Estimates for consideration. The first shows an outlay of nearly 70,000 Dollars would be required to make all the repairs and improvements which he considers necessary to prevent a recurrence of such Disasters. The second shows that about 9,000 dollars, exclusive of Convict labour, will be sufficient merely to put the various works into the condition they were in before the late Storm, without alteration, or improvement or any cost. In the event, however, of another such fall of rain they would then, he considers, suffer to as great if not greater extent than before.
