could not overtake it, and the stone boat got to the shore about three or four minutes before
the Convicts quickly got out and ascended the hill. I fired my revolver at the Convicts, continuing in pursuit, and I saw one near to the other Convict in the rear, I heard French call out "Man-man" and then I heard the report of the discharge of a firearm. I believe that I wounded some one, as I afterwards saw a track of blood. I and Jones landed and pursued the escaping Convicts. At this time, I was a little in the rear because I was without shoes. I saw French approach near to two of the Convicts who were some distance behind the main body, and I heard French call out "Man-man". I then saw one of the rear-most Convicts having an uplifted carrying pole, making a blow at French. I fired at the Convict, who fell down when hit.
He was shouting out "Tah Tah", when the two Convicts were shot, they fled, but lost sight of them in the brushwood. Two of the three Convicts were lying dead. They were those shot by French and myself.
