necessary to be prepared at all times for attempts at escape. I did not give him as full information as I might have done as it seemed to me he did not seek it. I did not mention the instruction about towing the Stone Boats. I urged upon him the necessity of always having the Police Boat in attendance, and I told him that I always went myself the Stone Boats' distance with them.
When going any reference to the towing of the Stone Boats I remember asking Mr Wilson, through Wick the Sailor for the Boat for the purpose, and the answer was I could not have it, and that if I had two boats I should want three, and if I had three I should want four. I never had any periodical firing in the morning in order to see the state the arms were in order. ▲ marked and attached to the Regulations in consequence of that part of the regulations already mentioned not being carried out. The Stone Boats were pulled by Convicts, the number varied from 4 to 10 according to the weather. The Jolly Boat was used also for other purposes.
