lying half a mile off. I had to swim to it. We went to the Stuck- Thillimore wanted to go in pursuit of the Stone Boat. I thought it better to give the alarm. The Portuguese Constable could not go in pursuit, he wanted to come to the Chop and get firearms. The Stove Boats have never been towed, I never heard of any order that the two Stone Boats should never be in the same place at the same time; there was no general arrangement to that effect.

We had suspicions as to the possibility of an outbreak. We had greater suspicions that morning than usual, we thought it was to be done in connection with the Stone Boat. Fourteen or fifteen of the Convicts who did not belong to the Stone gang got in it that morning, that had occurred before - but we had more trouble that morning than usual.
