Meanwhile, I fired off the two guns and got... ...before luci... ...again still having one Ball at the Western Yard arm at abmh 1/2 posh 10 at the time having the Healyard repaired, I was ordered by the Superintendent to make the signal to the Surgeon. I accordingly fired off two Guns and hoisted the Ball to the Western yard arm, I waited some time, not seeing any boats coming to the Island. About three quarters of an hour afterwards I came about and hoisted the Ball again. On making the Complete Signal for "Escape", I kept the Ball up for about half an hour and then fired off the two Guns again. The Superintendent (was with me immediately) gave me the order after firing the two Guns, and before the fifth round I had no more ammunition.
After firing the last signal & Richardson came; this was about half past 12 o'clock, and about a quarter to one the first detachment of Police came and with that detachment I went to the mainland.
I examined the halyards closely about two days before and found them all in order. I have not hoisted any signal since I have had charge. The halyard broke about two feet from the base; there was a splice at that part that broke, but I thought it was strong.
