- after I returned, the first detachment of Police under man Camo from Hongling. Mr Garman and I went with that party to the mainland. I believe if the Police Boat had come in to shore at the time I hailed that there was a chance of cutting off the Stone Pont from the opposite shore, I judge this - because I believe that we were nearer to the Stone Boat, than the Superintendent's gig was.

Iohn Mackenzie states, I am a Police Constable, I am at present doing signal duty at Stone Cutters' Island as Signal Man, I took that post about the 3rd or 4th April instant. On the 14th April I was at my quarters at the Signal Station, I heard an outcry and screaming. I ran out and then saw the Superintendent coming up the Hill. The Superintendent called out to me to hoist the Escape Signal. I loaded the gun. I had everything ready and was not long in doing so, I fired off the two guns to hoist up the balls, the balls were ready at the foot of the Mast having been got ready by Convicts who were employed going as Servants to the Signal Station. I was about to hoist the Ball to the Eastern Yard Arm being the signal for escape to Kowloon but some person called out, "not to Kowloon" and then I hoisted the Ball to the Western Arm being "Escape Elsewhere". I was hoisting the Ball to the mast head to complete this Signal when the Hoalyard...
