what was said; the Superintendent told me to go off to the Hulk and get the Superintendent's gig manned, I went accordingly but before I arrived at the Hulk I saw the Superintendent's gig manned by four prisoners having two pulling towards the shore and I saw one of the Stone Boats having Convicts on board pulling towards the opposite Main land from whence the stone gang had been at labor.
I then ran back towards the place at which the stone gang had been at work, two European Constables and several Indian Constables were running before the police Boat which was on its way towards the Hulk, I saw duty pulling from the porch towards the Hulk, the Stone boat being at that time half way across to the mainland. I hailed the police Boat to go in chase of the stone Boat but those on board did not understand me or did not hear me or attend but continued to the Hulk, when I arrived at the point I saw two European Constables and Eight Indian Constables assembled at the stone quarry there. I directed them to fire on the Boat which was then a little more than half way across and within range; they all tried to do so but only two Muskets were discharged out of the ten, the Constables tried several caps but the Muskets did not go off.
