them to carry it out strictly. The arrangement for having the ten leading convicts as the regular boatmen of each Stone Boat was in practice when I took charge of the Establishment on the 26th March last.

Enquiry adjourned at 7. p.m. until 11. A. M. on the 25th.

All the members of the Board assembled at the Convict Hulk at the time specified at the adjournment.

The Minutes of the preceding day were read, whereupon Mr. Tomlin requested permission to correct his Statement.

George L. Tomlin, further examined, states; with regard to that part of my statement referring to making the first "Escape" Signal, I wish to explain that the "Halyard" which broke was that belonging to the mast head, the ball at the end of the Casting being hoisted, and remained there.

NU DAD yard consequently it could not have been mistaken for the Signal for the attendance of a surgeon, that being a single Ball at the mast head.

At the time at which a perfect Escape signal was made, my present conviction is that it was made at about ten o'clock; that Signal was a ball at the mast head and a Ball at the Eastern yard arm or a Ball at the Western yard arm. I am not certain which.
